The History of Blackjack

Although the history of blackjack is unclear it is generally believed that it derives from such French games as Chemin develop Fer and the French Ferme. Thus it is believed that the game of blackjack has its beginnings in French casinos of the early 18 th century. At that time it was called “vingt-et-un” or twenty-one. The game has been played in the United States since the 1800's.

When it was originally played, if the player received with has first two cards, both a black jack and the ace of spades (also black). He would then win and be paid at a rate of 10 to one. This gave it the name of blackjack.

By the 1950’s and 60’s, books were being published that described how it was possible mathematically to play blackjack in such a way that you could be playing even with the house and even get a slight edge over the house. One such book actually gained such popularity that it appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. Books such as these sparked the interest of the public and made blackjack the most popular table game in the United States. This has remained the case all the way up to the present. Because of all of this media attention, the casinos have done quite well.

The success of the book that tld players how to beat the house was not that well received by the casinos. As a result, they tried to change the rules of the game to make it more difficult for players to win. As a result, players refused to play the new rules game and the casinos started to lose money until they allowed the old rules game back.

Casinos did introduce changes however, that would improve their odds. They increased the number of decks with which the game is played, introduced more frequent shuffling of decks and shuffling machines. These changes along with the fact that the methods described in the books were difficult to understand of at all, returned the game to odds that were acceptable to the casinos allowing them a sufficient edge.
